Early Exploration of the Moon
From Ranger to Apollo and Luna to Lunniy Korabl

Authors: Lund, Thomas

- A technical history of lunar exploration during the Cold War
- Reflects firsthand knowledge of US space operations and spacecraft design
- Abundant details on all major spacecraft subsystems, from rocket engines to electronics

The bold dream of lunar exploration was a national priority for both the US and the USSR during the Cold War era. From the earliest Russian Lunik probes to the United States’ successful manned flights to the surface, every attempt to visit the Moon held significant technological and political weight.

This book is a lucid and accessible account of humankind’s attempts to reach the Moon, from the perspective of an engineer who worked on the Apollo program. It describes in some technical detail the various spacecraft that were designed and launched on the first lunar explorations. Focusing primarily on the US program, it includes several chapters on Russian manned and unmanned lunar missions of the time.

The moon-bound spacecraft of the 1950’s through to the mid-1970s were remarkable for their performance, efficiency, and ruggedness, reflecting the best engineering art of the day. The book examines how every last bit of performance was wrung out of the existing technology, with the scale and stakes of each mission escalating as every attempt brought the two competing nations—and all of humanity—closer to the Moon.

Japanese Missions to the International Space Station: Help from the East

John O'Sullivan

- Outlines the Japanese contribution to development and operation of the International Space Station
- Covers approximately 1,100 days of flight time and 13 missions
- Demonstrates the type and level of international cooperation in the space program of today
- Serves as a reference for JAXA missions
- Discusses how Japan also provides a vital logistics role with the unmanned supply spacecraft H-II Transfer Vehicle

Japan has a rich history of human spaceflight, flying in space with both NASA and the Soviet/Russian space agencies over the years. This book tells the story of the JAXA astronauts who have visited the International Space Station and how they have lived on board, helped construct the space laboratory and performed valuable scientific experiments.

JAXA has contributed the largest single module to the ISS: the Kibō (Hope) science laboratory with its Logistics Module, Exposed Facility and robot arm. JAXA supplies the station with cargo and supplies on its automated cargo spacecraft, the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), but it is the human endeavour that captures the imagination. From brief visits to six-month expeditions, from spacewalking to commanding the Earth’s only outpost in space, JAXA astronauts have played a vital role in the international project.

Extensive use of colour photographs from NASA and JAXA depicting the experiments carried out and the phases of the ISS construction, together with the personal stories of the astronauts’ experiences in space, highlight the crucial part the Japanese have played in human spaceflight.

From Cave Man to Cave Martian: Living in Caves on the Earth, Moon and Mars

Manfred "Dutch" von Ehrenfried

EUR 26.74

- Examines ongoing efforts to develop technology capable of exploring cave systems and lava tubes on the Moon and Mars
- Provides an introduction to the field of speleology
- Outlines how future astronauts might scout, explore, and construct a cave system capable of supporting human life

As we move off Planet Earth and build settlements on the Moon, Mars and beyond, we are likely to first live in cave systems reminiscent of those that sheltered our earliest ancestors.

From Cave Man to Cave Martian describes ongoing research efforts to explore caves, pits, tunnels, lava tubes, skylights and the technologies that have been developed around them that one day may lead to lunar and Martian long-term habitation. Emphasis is placed on the operational aspects of working and living in such environments. Just how does the first crew find the right cave and prepare it for habitation? What are the dangers for EVA astronauts poking around such holes? What kinds of robots, tools, and equipment do they need? How might they clear the rubble and pressurize the space?

Although we may not require protection from terrestrial predators, we certainly need protection from the hostile and potentially deadly environment of space. This book explains the challenges associated with such projects--no water, no breathable air, or pressure, large temperature swings and dust storms, and radiation and micrometeorites- in constructing a viable settlement.

There are many lessons to be learned closer to home, from ongoing cave exploration and research on Earth, called speleology. This book thus examines how caves have been used by humans over the entirety of our species’ known history and what we have learned about them. It describes various types of cave dwellings, including those that break records such as the deepest, the longest and the largest cave systems.

Returning People to the Moon After Apollo
Will It Be Another Fifty Years?

Pat Norris

- Adopts a much larger chronological perspective than most other Apollo books in analyzing why there have been no further human missions to the Moon in the intervening five decades
- Provides an objective and realistic assessment of modern space projects aimed at sending humans to the Moon
- Offers an insider's expert account of the evolving space industry

July 2019 marks 50 years since Neil Armstrong took his famous first steps on the surface of the Moon. As people celebrate the anniversary of this great American achievement, they might wonder why there have been no further human missions to the Moon since the last Apollo mission (Apollo 17) in 1972 –  none from the United States or any other country.

This book assesses the technical legacy of the Apollo missions based on the 50 years of space developments since the program's end. The question “Why haven’t there been more human missions to the Moon?” is explored through a multidisciplinary approach that weaves together technological and historical perspectives. The nine manned Apollo missions, including the six that landed on the Moon, are described here by an author who has 50 years of experience in the space industry and whose work spanned the Apollo 8-13 Missions. This historical backdrop will inform the final section of the book, which provides a comprehensive assessment of today’s programs and current plans for sending humans to the Moon.

China's Space Station
Reaching for the Moon and Mars

Authors: Harvey, Brian

EURO 31.19

- Provides a comprehensive contemporary account of the Chinese space program set in a historical context
- Contains a listing of all Chinese launches and missions with tables of the different categories
- First book to focus on China's new space station, at a time when the ISS may be in its last decade of operation

In 2019, China astonished the world by landing a spacecraft and rover on the far side of the Moon, something never achieved by any country before. China had already become the world’s leading spacefaring nation by rockets launched, sending more into orbit than any other. China is now a great space superpower alongside the United States and Russia, sending men and women into orbit, building a space laboratory (Tiangong) and sending probes to the Moon and asteroids. Roadmap 2050 promises that China will set up bases on the Moon and Mars and lead the world in science and technology by mid-century.

China’s space programme is one of the least well-known, but this book will bring the reader up to date with its mysteries, achievements and exciting plans. China has built a fleet of new, powerful Long March rockets, four launch bases, tracking stations at home and abroad, with gleaming new design and production facilities. China is poised to build a large, permanent space station, bring back lunar rocks, assemble constellations of communications satellites and send spaceships to Mars, the moons of Jupiter and beyond. A self-sustaining lunar base, Yuegong, has already been simulated. In space, China is the country to watch.

Deuxième édition, la première s'appelant: In the Footsteps of Columbus

European Missions to the International Space Station
From 2001 to 2018

Authors: O'Sullivan, John

- Provides the only comprehensive text on the European Space Agency and its contributions to the International Space Station up to the present
- Offsets the US-Russian-centric balance of human spaceflight currently dominating the literature
- Highlights the diversity and collaborative nature of the European space goals, represented by the astronauts who have flown to the ISS

This second edition of what was previously called In the Footsteps of Columbus continues where the first ends, telling the story of the ESA astronauts who have visited the International Space Station over its second decade and how they have lived on board, helped construct the space laboratory and performed valuable scientific experiments.

The first edition covered the period from 2001 to 2012, detailing 18 missions from Umberto Guidoni’s STS-100 mission in 2001 to Andre Kuiper’s Promisse mission in 2012. This edition adds Luca Parmitano’s Volare mission in 2013 and concludes with Alexander Gerst’s mission, the second expedition commanded by an ESA astronaut, in 2018. The text covers all of the “class of 2009” astronauts as well as Parmitano and Gerst, Samantha Christoforetti of Italy, Andreas Mogensen of Denmark, Timothy Peake, the UK’s first ESA astronaut, and Thomas Pesquet of France. Extensive use of color photographs from NASA and ESA depicting the experiments carried out, the phases of the ISS construction and the personal stories of the astronauts in space highlights the crucial European work on human spaceflight.

While this added material covers a shorter period (6 years) and fewer missions (8 missions), in reality it nearly doubles the coverage of actual mission time in space (approximately 1,000 days). Overall, this edition encompasses over 2,000 days in space and 26 missions.

Missions européennes à la Station spatiale internationale
De 2001 à 2018

Auteurs : O'Sullivan, John

NASA's First Space Shuttle Astronaut Selection
Redefining the Right Stuff

David J.Shayler, Colin Burgess

- Provides the first definitive source of information on the lives, achievements and selection of NASA's first group of space shuttle astronauts
- Covers three exciting – sometimes tragic – decades of operation from the eyes of the 35 diverse crew members who all played important roles in the program
- Presents the latest astronaut group history and analysis to be written by the coauthors

In their latest collaborative effort, the authors bring to life the story behind the selection of the first group of space shuttle astronauts. Throughout its remarkable 30-year history as the workhorse of NASA’s human spaceflight exploration, twice halted through tragedy, the shuttle fleet overall performed magnificently. So too did these 35 men and women, swept up in the dynamic thrust and ongoing development of America’s space shuttle program. The astronauts themselves formed an extraordinary team composed of men and women, pilots and engineers, military members and scientists, civilians, and various ethnicities, they signaled vast operational and cultural changes in the program. Through this motley crew, the role of "space explorer" expanded far beyond those with the original so-called "Right Stuff" astronauts.

Using extensive research and revealing interviews, the book recounts and analyzes each astronaut's background and biography, the selection process, their training, and their first and subsequent missions. In doing so, the authors shows how this remarkable group came to be seen as a pivotal point in NASA and spaceflight history.

Redéfinir le Right Stuff (l'étoffe des héros)

David J.Shayler, Colin Burgess

European-Russian Space Cooperation
From De Gaulle to ExoMars

Authors: Harvey, Brian

- Presents the history of European–Russian cooperation in space
- Discusses the continuing ExoMars joint endeavour
- Addresses, as well as the science, the diplomatic, industrial, and political aspects to space exploration

The story of European-Russian collaboration in space is little known and its importance all too often understated. Because France was the principal interlocutor between these nations, such cooperation did not receive the attention it deserved in English-language literature. This book rectifies that history, showing how Russia and Europe forged a successful partnership that has continued to the present day.

Space writer Brian Harvey provides an in-depth picture of how this European-Russian relationship evolved and what factors—scientific, political and industrial—propelled it over the decades. The history begins in the cold war period with the first collaborative ventures between the Soviet Union and European countries, primarily France, followed later by Germany and other European countries. Next, the chapters turn to the missions when European astronauts flew to Russian space stations, the Soyuz rocket made a new home in European territory in the South American jungle and science missions were flown to study deep space. Their climax is the joint mission to explore Mars, called ExoMars, which has already sent a mission to Mars.

Through this close examination of these European-Russian efforts, readers will appreciate an altogether new perspective on the history of space exploration, no longer defined by   competition, but rather by collaboration and cooperation.

The Space Shuttle, An Experimental Flying Machine
Thirty Years of Challenges

Ben Evans

- Explores the technical and human stories behind the evolution of the Space Shuttle program
- Covers efforts made to enhance the shuttle’s safety, including improvements to the engine, external tank, solid rocket booster systems, and drag chute
- Includes recollections by shuttle astronauts, engineers and managers

This book explains how the achievements of the Space Shuttle, the world’s first reusable manned spacecraft, were built on the foundation of countless technical challenges.
Through thick and thin, the Space Shuttle remained the centerpiece of the American human spaceflight program for three decades. In addition to deploying satellites, planetary probes and, of course, the Hubble Space Telescope, it delivered astronauts to the Mir space station and assembled and sustained the International Space Station. Yet the path to these incredible achievements was never an easy one, with some obstacles resulting in the loss of life and other major consequences that plagued the fleet throughout its operational career.

The book adopts a challenge-by-challenge approach, focusing on specific difficulties and how (if at all) they were fully overcome. Going beyond the technical issues, it relates the human stories of each incident and how changes were effected in order to make the shuttle an exceptionally safer – though still experimental – flying machine.

La navette spatiale, une machine volante expérimentale
Trente ans de défis

Ben Evans
