Wilma menace la Floride et le KSC.




D'après les estimations du NOAA, la trajectoire de Wilma implique un passage proche du KSC ce lundi.

Le centre a fermé ses portes aujourd'hui, mais il n'y a pas eu de mesures de sécurité particulière pour les installations.

KSC weathers storm;
No major damage reported at spaceport

CAPE CANAVERAL - NASA's multibillion dollar space shuttle fleet, twin
launch pads and other facilities at Kennedy Space Center appear to
have survived Hurricane Wilma without suffering major damage,
officials said today.

But heavy rain and high winds nevertheless swept through the space
center as the hurricane moved across the southern part of Florida and
toward the Atlantic Ocean.

"We're in the Mary Poppins mode. We've getting hit pretty hard with
sideways rain," said KSC spokesman George Diller.

The rain at times was so heavy that NASA's 36-story shuttle launch
pads could not be seen from the KSC Launch Control Center three to
four miles away, Diller said.

A tornado touched down briefly near the southern entrance to the
space center on North Merritt Island about 10 a.m., and a funnel
cloud was spotted near Haulover Canal an hour later but did not touch
down.

The storm produced hurricane-force winds when a sustained wind of 76
mph was measured at Kennedy Space Center on a 500-foot-tall weather
tower near the Vehicle Assembly Building at 11:25 a.m.

A gust of 94 mph was measured near a launch pad at 11:30 a.m.,
officials said.

NASA emergency management officials planned to send a team out to
assess damage early this afternoon. Preliminary reports indicate that
no major damage was done, Diller said.

"We might have lost a couple of panels on the Vehicle Assembly
Building, but overall, we don't see any obvious damage," Diller
said. "It's turning out to be just about what we expected."
